ESAD presents project at the Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID) Conference

IN SYNCHRO MIGUEL C TAVARES

At the invitation of the Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID), ESAD is joining the Conference —  Encuentro BID de Enseñanza y Diseño 2025, from 18 to 19 November in Madrid, with streaming available to watch here.

In this edition, the theme is "Design with purpose", aiming to highlight the transfer experiences developed by design schools and universities in Latin America, emphasising models of collaboration between education, professionals, companies and institutions.

On 18 November, ESAD will present the In Synchro project, part of the Porto Design Biennale 2025 programme. This project is part of the session entitled "Success stories in design transfer, social applicability and innovation in visual format" and highlights a collaboration between ESAD and IED Milano schools, companies and associations (Lexus Europe ED² and ALADI — Lavra's Association for the Support of the Intellectually Disabled), the design studio A+N Studio, lecturer Rui Caldas and students from the Graduate in Design — Product at ESAD.

For this project, three comfort devices were developed to promote sensory stimulation and improve daily life at the ALADI institution:
— Suzi, a breathing cushion
— Tide Memories, an adapted loom
on display at Casa do Design.
— Porto-L, a real-time audiovisual installation on display at Campo 24 de Agosto Metro Station.

In this edition of the Porto Design Biennale, we collaborated with BID to organise the exhibition PRESENT CONTINUOUS, curated by lecturer Helena Sofia Silva, which can be visited until 12 December at the Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão, part of the Porto Museum. This exhibition is an itinerant exhibition that results from the intersection between projects presented at the last edition of the Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID'24) and the theme proposed for this edition of the Porto Design Biennale — Time is Present. Inventing the Common. It is a formal action, marking the meeting between two events that share concerns and here outline a new form of collaboration.

The Porto Design Biennale is organised by esad—idea, Research in Design and Art, and promoted in collaboration with two municipalities (Porto and Matosinhos), in partnership with ESAD — College of Arts and Design.
