Russel Bestley is a principal lecturer at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, where he is currently course director for MA Graphic Design. He is engaged in teaching and learning across the Postgraduate programme together with Research Degree supervision.
His areas of specialist interest include graphic design research methods, information design and British popular culture, in particular late twentieth century popular and alternative music.
He has co-authored and designed a number of publications, including Visual Research: An Introduction to Research Methodologies in Graphic Design (AVA Academia 2004, revised 2nd edition 2011), Up Against the Wall: International Poster Design (RotoVision 2002) and Experimental Layout (RotoVision 2001), and has contributed articles to publications including Eye, Zed, Emigré, The National Grid and the Oxford Encyclopaedia of the Modern World. His most recent book, The Art of Punk, was published by Omnibus Press (UK), Voyageur (North America), Hannibal Verlag Gmbh (Germany) and Hugo et Compagnie (France) in 2012.
His PhD thesis, entitled Hitsville UK: Punk Rock and Graphic Design in the Faraway Towns, 1976-84, was completed in 2008 and led to several publications, a website, and exhibitions in London, Southampton, Blackpool and Leeds. He is also on the editorial board of the academic journal Punk and Post Punk, published by Intellect Ltd.
