Sneakers
— Portuguese Brands From the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium
The exhibition and catalog for Sneakers: Portuguese Brands From the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium are the outcomes of a research project by Pedro Carvalho de Almeida on more than 100 sneaker brands designed and manufactured in Portugal. The exhibition was on display at Casa do Design between February 11 and September 10, 2023, resulting from a partnership between esad—idea and ID+.
Passionate about Portuguese footwear, researcher and designer Pedro Carvalho de Almeida created an exhibition to unveil the relationships between Portuguese design, the footwear industry, and the socio-economic background of the country in the 20th century.
Taking from the curator's collection of 500 sneakers and 100 brands designed and manufactured in Portugal, with emphasis on Sanjo and Cortebel, the exhibition comprised objects, photographs, and other documents that show how footwear made in Portugal was part of the country's daily life.
Following the exhibition, the catolog offers an insight into the cultural, social, political and economic significance of these brands, and an in-depth look at the popular brands Sanjo and Cortebel. It also features designs and packaging for streetwear and different sports, and a surprising collection of other brands represented by small series.
