Portugal Pop

— Fashion in Portuguese 1970-2020

An exhibition and editorial project resulting from a partnership between MUDE — Museum of Design and Fashion, and esad—idea. The last 50 years in Portugal as seen through fashion and popular culture, fostering the debate on the historical, economic and social value of ‘Portugueseness’.

On display at Casa do Design between 19 March and 13 November 2022, PORTUGAL POP. Fashion in Portuguese 1970-2020 curated by Bárbara Coutinho (MUDE), provides an overview of fashion in Portugal, discussing the relationship between Portuguese popular culture and global pop culture.

The exhibition featured 200 garments by more than 30 Portuguese fashion designers, emphasizing the relationship between popular and erudite culture, cosmopolitanism and nationalism, urban life and the rural world, tradition and the outlook of new generations. Against the backdrop of the various socio-cultural and political contexts that the country has experienced over the last 50 years, PORTUGAL POP reflects on the concepts of identity and ‘Portugueseness’ embodied in national fashion and culture.

The exhibition catalog follows the path and narratives proposed by curator Bárbara Coutinho. Combining the garments with some of the personalities of Portuguese culture who influenced and incorporated the vanguard of national fashion, the catalogue also presents a series of essays providing a historical overview of Portuguese Fashion.
