Petrichor
— The Smell of Rain
Petrichor: The Smell of Rain was the main exhibition at the third edition of the Porto Design Biennale, under the theme Being Water: How We Flow Together and Shape Each Other.
Curated by Fernando Brízio, Petrichor mapped phenomena and devices that reveal the ubiquity of water and the interconnection between humans and more-than-humans.
Vital to organic and built structures, water connects all living beings through its flow. In Petrichor (a Greek term for the scent that the earth gives off after the first rains), Fernando Brízio introduced the concept of a natural aqueous flow interface associated with human-designed interfaces.
The exhibition displayed some of these fluid interfaces (artificial heart valves, plant rafts, ship traffic trackers, water collectors, among others). It also referred to places and rituals of communication, exchange, and interaction between water in its various states, and between water and other agents.
