Susana Barbosa, 3rd year Communication Design student, is on the [shortlist][2] of the 10 finalist students selected by Penguin Publishing in the [2021 Penguin Random House Student Design Award][1], in the Non-Fiction Cover Award category. The student's project consists of a graphic interpretation of The Uninhabitable Earth: A Story of the Future by author David Wallace-Wells.
2021 Penguin Random House Student Design Award is an international competition, in which over 2000 higher education design students participated. Taking part in the competition during the confinement period allowed the higher education students to develop skills in the field of publishing by responding to concrete objectives and getting closer to the physical-digital business world in a pandemic context.
The competition jury consisted of Richard Bravery (Art Director, Penguin General Books), Lee Motley (Art Director, Michael Joseph), Jim Stoddart (Art Director, Penguin Press), Joy Yamusangie (Visual Artist) and Clive Russell (Graphic Designer).
For this project, one of the main concerns was to make the compositions almost tangible, as if it were possible to feel the texture and plasticity created. There was a need to attract the viewer's attention, the theme asked for voice, affirmation, and impact. And for that reason, the nature of the work was the same, to intrigue anyone who observed it. Through the textures, I wanted to create expression and certain brutality. In conclusion, I tried to transmit a message, to reinforce the power and impact that this book has.
