Porto Design Biennale hosts screen printing workshop with elderly residents of Sant’Ana nursing home

Screen Printing Workshop at ESAD: Seniors from Lar de Sant’Ana print a manifesto about the sea.

On 12 March, the ESAD Gallery hosted a screen printing workshop as part of the Biennale's Happisode Pole Pole.

Pole Pole is a self-built pavilion installed in Parque 25 de Abril, in Matosinhos, designed in collaboration with neighbouring institutions, artistic mediator Cláudia Lopes and CIIMAR (Centre for Marine Research). One of these partner institutions is Lar de Sant'Ana, whose attendees participated in sessions with CIIMAR about their memories of the sea and the importance of protecting it.

This collaboration resulted in a manifesto, which will now be materialised through screen printing, using ESAD's workshops. More than just creating a final piece, the aim of this meeting is to bring the elderly to ESAD so that they can learn about the technique up close and experience the printing process.

The group returned the following day for a morning of simple impressions, celebrating the connection between the senior community, scientific research, and design.
