Carlos Marques was born in Coimbra in 1948. A Professor and Sculptor, he was cofounder of ESAD, having played an active role in its creation. He was managing partner of CIFAD, the founding entity of ESAD.
Graduated in Sculpture from ESBAP – Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto, he taught Sculpture and was a member of the Directive and Scientific Councils of FBAUP – Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. In 1984, he received the Annual Research Award from the National Academy of Fine Arts.
His work, which includes sculpture, scenography, and drawing, was presented in several exhibitions and is part of the public space in various national and international cities, such as Lisbon, Porto, Mindelo, and London. He was also cofounder of Lugar do Desenho – Fundação Júlio Resende.
In 2025, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Municipality of Matosinhos, in recognition of his contribution to culture.
His artistic work and academic contributions will always be remembered as part of our collective history.
The wake will take place at the Capela de Corpo Santo, in Leça da Palmeira, today, September 8, starting at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on September 9, at 4 p.m., at the Church of Leça da Palmeira.
Tomorrow, September 9, ESAD will be in mourning and remain closed.
