BOOKS MATTER is a series of conferences that invite some of the most significant figures in contemporary editorial design to present ideas and processes at ESAD. Its first edition invites two designers — Joost Grootens and Ronnie Fueglister — with different experiences and working frameworks.
Organized by João Martino and Miguel Almeida, as part of the launch of ESAD's Post-graduate Course in Editorial Design and E-Publishing, BOOKS MATTER intends to pave the way for a discussion of innovative, pertinent and contemporary practices in the fields of editorial design and publication.
Joost Grootens (NL) studied architectural design at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam. He established Studio Joost Grootens in 1995.In 2010 He was appointed head of the Master Information Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. Since 2015, he is PhD candidate Artistic Research at the PhDArts programme of Univerity Leiden and Royal Academy of the Arts, The Hague. Next to designing digital information environments, maps, typefaces and spatial installations Studio Joost Grootens works primarily in the field of book design. We are constantly challenged to develop appropriate formats that justify the production of printed material, acknowledging the growing need for visual representation of data. The books we make present knowledge, but they also question the relevance of typologies such as catalogues, indexes and atlases as part of an ongoing research process. We like to deal with complexity, showing that it is a misconception to assume that something complex should look complicated. SJG works for readers.
Ronnie Fueglister (CH) is a graphic designer. He studied at ECAL in Lausanne, at the Basel School of Design where he graduated in 2005 and at Zurich University of the Arts where he graduated on Advanced Studies in Type Design in 2013. Between 2008 and 2013 he worked in collaboration as Studio Sport in Basel/Zurich, where he started to focus on cultural clients, amongst others Galerie Mark Müller in Zurich and Kunsthalle Basel. As an independent graphic designer he developed the visual identity for LISTE Performance Project 2013 and 2014, the website for Kunsthalle Basel and the corporate identity of Portikus in Frankfurt. As a specialist in typography and book design he worked together on publications with artists auch as Daniel Gustav Cramer, Miriam Cahn, Mandla Reuter, Mike Bouchet & Paul McCarthy, and more. Currently he is working on publications with Hannah Weinberger and Amy Sillman.
