Portuguese designer Ivan Hunga Garcia, an alumnus of the Undergraduate Degree in Design — Fashion, is one of the names featured in the exhibition "Dirty Looks: Desire and Decay in Fashion", on display at the Barbican Art Gallery in London until 25 January 2026.
This exhibition brings together 120 works by 60 designers from around the world, inviting reflection on the past, present and possible futures of fashion. Among the pieces on display, Ivan Hunga Garcia's "Cariátide n.02" stands out.
Ivan develops a multidisciplinary practice that encompasses performance, speculative design, and biotechnology, focusing on personalised processes through the sensory qualities of materials and visuals.
Since 2024 that Ivan has been part of esad—design [cluster], and has been based at his studio in Matosinhos Market.
esad—design [cluster] is an infrastructure resulting from a partnership between Matosinhos City Council and ESAD that enables the incubation of innovative projects by students, alumni and teachers in the west wing of Matosinhos Market. This initiative provides direct support for ESAD's design initiatives, fostering the creation of sustainable business models and the establishment of future companies that will boost Matosinhos' innovative business fabric.
