Dedicated to two of the most important Portuguese graphic designers of the past 50 years, the exhibition 1+1 DESIGN GRÁFICO João Machado + José Brandão lead us on a journey through the technical, formal and conceptual evolution of communication design since the 70’s to the present, through the visual power of posters, stamps, books, logos and other graphic designs of João Machado (Coimbra, 1942) and José Brandão (New York, 1944).

Two exhibitions that result in one or in a variety of ways revealed by the work exhibited, especially a lot of material (studies, scale models, artwork) never shown before. This is the new suggestion of the espaço Quadra, which now extends to the public space through the Viewport Winebar, designed and built in a workshop system by the architect Sami Rintala and a group of students from ESAD and from other national and international schools, reinventing ways on how we see the culture of design.

Organized by ESAD/ Escola Superior de Artes e Design from Matosinhos, by Câmara Muncipal de Matosinhos and also by Fábrica de Santo Thyrso, the exhibition 1+1 DESIGN GRÁFICO João Machado + José Brandão opens on 7 July, at 7pm, until 13 October, including a program of lectures and guided tours.

João Machado (Coimbra, 1942) graduated in sculpture at the Escola de Belas Artes do Porto (Oporto’s Fine Arts School), has developed a visual, creative and erudite language, marked by a continuous formal experimentation, which has received strong international recognition. Among several awards, he received the Icograda Excellence Award. In recent works, such as the posters for International Year of Forests (2011) and Japan - From Great Earthquake to Recreation (2011) shows up an impressive syntax and semantics width of the work of João Machado, capable of constantly adding new elements to an authorial and mature language.

José Brandão (New York, 1944) graduated in graphic design in London with a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation. He worked with Daciano Costa in Lisbon, in the Joubert atelier in Paris and in London with Keith Cunningham. As a founding partner of the Portuguese Designers Association, he devoted himself with the same commitment to education and professional practice of design, developing a vast work embodied in hundreds of books, posters and stamps characterized by a remarkable balance between communicative functionality and formal inventiveness.
