The Typography Meeting (10ET is an annual international scientific event based in Portugal that gathers researchers, practitioners, pedagogues, students and partners. It includes conferences by keynote speakers, communications of papers selected through double-blind peer-review process, workshops and exhibitions. Our goal is to bring together leading individuals and projects in the Typographic panorama in order to: disseminate high level research and technical knowledge; foster learning, inspiration and critical thinking; and contribute to the discussion and the development of ideas in Type and Typography, with the support and recognition of ATIPO, ATYPI and ADOBE.
The 10th Typography Meeting will be held in Matosinhos, Portugal, from 21th to 23rd November 2019, organized by ESAD College of Art and Design and esad—idea Research in Design and Art. This event is part of the Porto Design Biennale 2019 Satellites program. This year’s edition theme is Borders, to stimulate what we believe to be relevant in today’s challenging international landscape.
The boundary is the line that defines and differentiates the exterior of the interior, determines what is inside and what is outside, defines the finite and the tangible character of the territories, restricting and limiting them. Typographical designs presuppose their concrete materiality, their physical context, but also the definition and contextualisation of their conceptual territory, which goes beyond the author’s imperative necessity, the reason for their circumstances, their conveniences, their tools, of its transgressive nature; its limits; its borders. By establishing a limit that defines and determines the reading of the fields that separates, seemingly antagonistic and paradoxically complementary, the frontier acquires a visibility that converts it into the object of reflection.
The frontier is, in this specific context, the subject of reflection on the technology that has defined and configured the spaces of type design and construction of the typographic design. A territory that is constituted of forms and counterforms that establish the world of things, that express ideas and ideals and that represent the tangible and the intangible. Digital technology has expanded the notion of type design for hybrid territories, where mutation, animation and color transmute letter design in multiple ways. Despite the antagonistic spatial positions, the sides of the boundary constitute a single space; contain the same information and share the same context, although in an idiosyncratic way they can be understood as different, strange, extraneous. This idea of a physical boundary that distances concepts and experiences is refuted by the sharing of information and the conceptual territory that converts it into the same. Where do these limits stand? How do they define themselves? How do you determine your design?
