A Letra Redonda

Calligraphy Workshop with João Fonseca

ESAD

Come and discover the Round Letter in a calligraphy workshop led by calligrapher João Fonseca, an initiative organised by GAE in partnership with and proposed by Sans Title — a typography club.

Throughout the session, you will gain an understanding of how the letter is formed through the sequence of strokes and the use of the nib.

Widely used in the teaching of writing in Portugal between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Round Letter (also known as the French Letter) is characterised by its rounded forms, the contrast between thin and thick strokes, and a structure based on proportion, rhythm and regularity.

Using a nib and ink, the workshop offers a practical introduction to this calligraphic tradition, exploring fundamental aspects of handwriting such as ductus, spacing, and the construction of lowercase and uppercase letters.

  • Limited places.
  • Free participation. Registration is compulsory, with payment of a deposit (€5), which will be refunded on the day of the workshop.
  • Note: The deposit must be paid in person, in cash and as the exact amount, at the ESAD office.
