Designing Human and Nonhuman Entanglements with AI
— Lecture and Workshop by Joana Pestana
–
Auditorium (Free entry)
From June 4 to 6, ESAD will host designer and educator Joana Pestana for a lecture and workshop on design, technology and ecology. The lecture is free and takes place on Wednesday, June 4, at 17:00, in the auditorium.
This workshop will explore methods of more-than-human representation in the design process, starting with the creation of a collective agency of entities of zoological, geological and/or technological origin in a specific geographical context. Large Language Models (LLM) tools, the Eden X platform and printed resources will be provided. The role of the designer will be re-imagined by setting up a collaborative regime with the aggregate created to conceive visual representations that diagram the interdependent relationships as well as the different sensory experiences, longevities, voices and scales inherent in the same ecosystem.
She develops collaborative and independent workshops, editing or curatorial projects that reflect relationships between design, post-humanism and new literacies, including the (co)creation of Critical-GPS (Royal College of Art, 2019), Scrolling the Arcane (Planetário do Porto, 2020), Omniscience: Strategies of Fracture and Escape (Fórum da Maia, 2021), scripted.space (2022), Vigilância (Leonorana, 2023) and Eden X (2022-2025).
The Lecture and subsequent Workshop, aimed exclusively at students on the MA in Communication Design, is part of the programme of lectures and intensive workshops on this MA coordinated by Andrew Howard. The lecture is free entry.
