Water Design Views is the Blue Design Alliance's cycle of events. Considering water as a major field of research, in which concepts from the fields of design, art and science intersect, this cycle aims to bring together authors, research communities and artistic practices to expand perspectives of reflection on contemporary ecosystems.
COMPLETE PROGRAMME
Communicating the Sea: The Meeting of Creative Poetics and Strategic Thinking
23.10.2023, 15:00
- Cris Santos / Ocyano
How can we combine creative thinking with feeling to create effective communication solutions that at the same time look after the planet, connect us to the ocean and contribute to its sustainability and regeneration? Communication is a driving force for transforming the world and design must take on the role of promoting environmental innovation, through the medium and the message, supporting companies and projects in order to achieve collective prosperity. Design Feeling* opens up space for thought, feeling and intuition, to 'dive' deep into ideas and projects that build new narratives based on an ecological connection and understanding in the meeting of art, science and the wisdom of nature. This session is led by Cris Santos, designer, illustrator, producer, underwater educator, co-founder of the Atlantis Programme and founder of Ocyano, a creative studio specialising in communicating the sea.
How many drops of water are on your t-shirt?
06.11.2023, 15:00
- Joana Campos Silva
In a fast-paced world, buying clothes is still emotional. What we wear is often motivated by the post on Instagram and the cheap price in the shop window. But are we paying for every drop? This session is a journey between emotion and reason, where every drop counts. With practical examples, good practices from the textile and clothing sector will be presented in the fight against this precious commodity, which is water. The session will be led by Joana Campos Silva, a communications graduate with a specialism in sustainable management, who has focused the last 10 years of her career on developing fashion brands, becoming a circular fashion consultant. Joana is also the founder of Fashion Markers and Makers Academy and an ambassador for Be@t - Bioeconomy in Textiles.
**Beachcombing and ARTivism in Ocean Conservation *13.11.2023, 15:00*
- Ana Pêgo
Many institutions are currently studying plastics and creating strategies to remove them from the oceans. There are more and more associations, movements and individuals cleaning up cities, the countryside and coastal areas, but it's not enough. To minimise this problem, we can make small changes in our daily lives. However, there is a great responsibility on the part of companies and governments to create products and effective waste management strategies that simplify citizens' lives and motivate them to change. To this end, Plasticus Maritimus Projects was born, a personal environmental education project that combines science and art in ocean literacy.Ana Pêgo has a degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries, has worked for several years on research projects and, since 2012, has dedicated herself to environmental education projects, where she combines science with art, with the aim of publicising the life of the seas and raising awareness of ocean conservation. Her Plasticus Maritimus projects have won several prizes and awards in Portugal and abroad.
The Aquarium is a Listening Glass 20.11.2023, 15:00
- Angela Rui
Through the mediation of glass walls, an aquarium implements a material separation between the aquatic and terrestrial worlds, as well as an ontological separation between humanity and what we define as Nature. Its transparent character, which simultaneously connects and separates, evokes the modernist production of the relationship we establish with other species: animals taken from exotic or distant places are transformed into specimens and classification units.Through a series of behind-the-scenes stories, between laboratory archives, machines, microscopes, national aquariums, climate control, localised ocean infrastructures and real care, this session aims to address this impossible love story from which we will emerge losers, but perhaps even a little more animal.Ângela Rui, PhD in design, curator, researcher and journalist, contributes, through guidance, to revising the role of design as a critical practice that supports eco-social renewal.
Rethink
27.11.2023, 15:00
- Ricardo Ramos
The Rethink session looks at Ricardo Ramos' journey and transformation into xicogaivota and the importance of the rules created when transforming "rubbish" into art. The coherence and honesty of our attitudes and actions and the ease with which certain words/actions lead us to consider that we have done the right thing and done enough. The focus on waste emissions and neglecting the role of natural resource extraction that leads to irreversible changes in the ecosphere.
All sessions take place in ESAD's auditorium. Participation is completely free, subject to prior registration.
