With the Illustration module, an atelier-laboratory was created by means of an experimental work, learning through doing, doing reflecting, with the purpose of helping students to open their referential, technical, conceptual, creative and methodologic horizons. We seeks to help students acquire a visual, technical and technological culture as well as a sensitivity to the means and the creative ecosystem: after researching authors, we use their work as reference, we interpret the images, reflect on their process and apply it to new situations, continuously reinterpreting illustrations that are arranged in a living-archive.

The exhibit 40 anos. Cinanima. João Machado, a part of the Faculty of Belas Artes, allowed us to share a unique opportunity: of connecting with the author of a work that is a global reference and of connecting with a work with unique characteristics in terms of vitality, longevity and of the illustrative and creative process. In addition, a double opportunity occurred: of watching reunited every poster from Cinanima since the mid-seventies until today and of analyzing the before and after of the computer through models and enlightening drawings.

Therefore, these images resulted from a challenge: to reinterpret illustrations from previous proposals through the language of João Machado. The value of this project is in the exercise, in the diversity, in the sharing or in anything else we please, because, that is how a school works. In fact, they did not leave the classroom: ESAD is, in itself, a classroom. The best homage we can offer to an author – in this case, an author that ESAD has already honored – is, to establish a dialog with his work, seeking to awaken and reinforce quality in students’ works.
