Thomas daniell – instant future

Osaka Expo ’70 was the first World’s Fair to be held in Asia and the best attended since they began. Rather than presenting imagery derived from traditional arts and crafts, the expo was taken as an opportunity to present a futuristic image of Japan through experimental architecture, immersive media art installations, information technology, and robotics. This convergence of radical architecture, art, technology, and politics was also a moment of profound social transformation. In short, 1970 marked the end of modernity and the beginning of postmodernity in Japan.

Thomas Daniell is Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Saint Joseph, Macau, prior to which he spent twenty years as a practicing architect in Japan. He holds a B.Arch from Victoria University of Wellington, an M.Eng from Kyoto University, and a Ph.D from RMIT University.

He is one of the most respected specialists in contemporary Japanese architecture, responsible for the edition and translation of internationally relevant and awarded titles, including FOBA: Buildings (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005), After the Crash: Architecture in Post-Bubble Japan (Princeton Architectural Press, 2008), Houses and Gardens of Kyoto (Tuttle, 2010), Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama + Amorphe (Equal Books, 2011), and An Anatomy of Influence (Architectural Association, forthcoming 2018).
