Writers on symbolism point out that humans quickly turn their solutions to life's problems into symbols. The raging river to be forded gives us the bridge and the boat. The heat of the sun and the wet of the rain give us the parasol and umbrella. From the long journey on foot, the mountain to be climbed and the plum to be picked we have the road, the shoe, the stairs and the ladder.
These and other visual symbols, metaphors and reminders thus derived, can in their turn stand for human needs such as aspiration, industry, endurance, security, foresight, organisation and safety.
This exhibition is the result of a four-day workshop with students of the MA in Communication Design 2014/15. It included the lecture Then, Now & Later, by George Hardie with the students of the MA in Communication Design 2014/2015, coordinated by Andrew Howard.
