Organized by the EUROPEAN ALLIANCE for SMC BMC, SMC BMC Design Awards aimed to recognize and promote design excellence from students and young professionals. The contest reinforces the message that SMC and BMC materials are innovative, versatile, economical and safe to use within new products that benefit the consumer and society. The competition theme this year was sustainable mobility and focused on improving aspects of our daily lives, today, tomorrow and in the future.

More than 30 proposals were submitted from different universities around Europe and evaluated by an international jury consisting of: Joan Montobbio: Jury Chairman, Managing Director of Menzolit Spain/ Menzolit UK, Vice-President of European Alliance for SMC BMC; Hubertus Rehermann: Technical Director SMC BMC Component Manufacturing for Mercedes-Benz cars Germany; Andrea Ratti: Professor Composites Engineering and Design at Politecnico Milano, Italy; Joachim Froment: Independent designer, worked for Skibsted Ideation (Denmark) on Sustainable Mobility projects.

The finalists were invited to present their projects and receive their awards at the exhibition Composites Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, on 10th September 2019. Project ALLE won 2nd prize, designed by Maria João Melo, Mauro Silva and Inês Mimoso. ALLE was a road-marking drone to improve visual communication for autonomous vehicles. Project ‘RAYBOARD’ won 3rd prize, designed by Nídia Rodrigues, Ana Rita Pintão and Simão Chaves. RAY-BOARD was an electronic powered body.board for water sports and shore-line rescue.

The EUROPEAN ALLIANCE for SCM BMC intends to maintain relationships with the designers, to seek partners, develop and prototype their products to the next phase.
