esad-idea, Research in Design and Art integrates the European project FACS - Future Automotive Cockpit & Storage, promoted by Simoldes Plásticos to strengthen research, technological development and innovation within the automotive industry, developing the cockpit of the future for new models of light commercial vehicles.

FACS has enabled the design, development and demonstration of a new design and new modules for the interior of professional vehicles (van type), aiming to anticipate the development trend of the automotive industry in autonomous vehicles, and exploring the opportunities of the commercial vehicles interior. These developments will facilitate the integration of user-centred, highly innovative, sustainable and differentiating functionalities. The study was carried out using the passenger compartment of the Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Jumper vehicles as a design element.

Since 2017, several esad-idea researchers and students from ESAD's Master’s in Product Design were involved in the project. Their tasks included writing briefings, doing research, surveys, interviews, creativity sessions, workshops, design proposals, 2D and 3D modelling, CAD designs and technical assistance.

esad-idea aided Simoldes Plásticos in carrying out a survey of user experiences, preliminary research and designing new products for the vehicle’s cockpit. The projects, presented on October 27, comprise a new door panel, roof storage and dashboard, having as basis the concepts of modularity and adaptability.

Within Simoldes Group, Simoldes Plástics works for the automotive industry, the most relevant sector for the company's turnover. Simoldes is one of the few industry groups able to supply brands such as Renault, Volvo, VW, Audi, Nissan, Toyota, Porsche, Honda, Mercedes, GM, Mitsubishi, Bébéconfort and AmtrolAlfa.

The project, co-funded by the Portugal 2020 programme and the European Regional Development Fund, also included the participation of researchers from CEiia - Centre for Engineering and Development and the PSA Group, responsible for the evaluation and validation of the research results.
