THE (in)Complete Collection by ESAD
In the scope of the partnership between ESAD and “THE Design” (Oporto and Lisbon), some projects are developed, which interpret the (in)complete concept. It corresponds to the exploration of the relational concept, which means that it’s still in the open. Without undermining the student/author proposal, each person suggests ways in which the user can continue to recreate and amuse forms of use, adding something about himself.
Projects from the students of the 2nd and 3rd year, developed in partnership with “THE Design”.
Ice Jewellery Ana Duque
Thinking of Jewellery as a form of art and proposing that it gives us food for thought about something related to contemporary life, the Ice Jewellery project questions the icons of Fine Jewellery and proposes a reflection about the aspects of life to which they are connected, through the use of materials and the creation of jewellery as ephemeral as ice.
Project developed in the scope of the degree in Jewellery, in collaboration with the degree in Digital Arts and Multimedia and in partnership with ESAD Valencia.
Face it! / The Carnival of the Animals Áurea Praga
The projects presented were developed from the line between vanity and beauty and the final result intends to draw attention to the image of beauty that is rooted in current society and to the different ways that we sometimes subject ourselves to, in one way or another, painful procedures in order to achieve it.
Projects developed in the scope of ESAD’s Post-Graduation in Jewelery Design and Master’s Degree in Design.
A Pão e Água Teresa Dantas
This work contains aspects of the project developed in the scope of ESAD’s Master’s Degree in Design, in terms of contents and meanings, about artistic jewellery. It deals with the consumerism and the current crisis, questioning the possibility of returning to elements that we usually associate with the things that are essential to everyday life. It also questions to what extent the materials can contribute, as metaphorical contents, to the building of meaning.
Project developed in the scope of the ESAD’s Master’s Degree in Design.

biographical notes
Áurea Praga

[Aurea Praga][1] specializes in jewellery and illustration, establishing relations between those two areas. Áurea has a Master’s Degree in Product Design and Interfaces (ESAD Matosinhos), where she presented the project thesis “Desenhar uma História para Colocar no Dedo”, a Post-Graduation in Jewellery Design (ESAD Matosinhos) and a Bachelor´s Degree in Communication Design (FBAUP Oporto). Her academic background guided her to the narrative style of the jewellery. She also had complementary technological training in “Engenho e Arte” and “Contacto Directo”, two schools in Oporto, as well as in CINDOR, in Gondomar. In 2010 she won the 1st prize of the “Vip Jóias” contest, in the category “National Inovation” and in 2011 she was chosen for the exhibition POP’s of the Serralves Foundation, both with the series of rings “I’m All Ears”. She also won the 1st prize in the “Concurso Jornadas 2011Tendências de Ourivesaria e Moda/AORP*” competition, with the project “Face it!”.
Lia Gonçalves

[Lia Gonçalves][2] has a Degree in Jewellery (ESAD Matosinhos). Since 2009 she idealizes and conceives her own jewellery, basing that work on contemporary concepts and creation processes. In her career, she first got in touch with the traditional market when, in 2010, she did an internship in Póvoa do Lanhoso. That experience allowed her to perfect the filigree technique, but it did not fully live up to her expectations: it lacked the freedom to create and innovate. She preserved the artisanal method as the main manufacturing process, but she distanced herself completely from the formal aspects of the conventional jewellery. She started favouring the use of silver, rather than gold, and she started working mainly with simple lines and minimalistic shapes.
Pedro Sequeira

[Pedro Sequeira][4]’s artwork focuses on the functional object as a means of information synthesis and the Semiotics, incorporating the drawing, the photographic image, the jewel object and, most recently, text. Pedro has a Master’s Degree from “Faculdade de Belas Artes” of the University of Porto and is a graduate of the “Akademie der Bildenden Künste München”, in Germany. He also studied photography, jewellery and mineralogy and writes and publishes about the work of authors in the field of jewellery. In 2009 he organized “A Grande Mala Gorda” cycle, a platform for the presentation and discussion of the contemporary artistic practice in jewellery and the disclosure of the work developed by Portuguese authors or authors resident in Portuguese territory.
José Carlos Marques

[José Carlos Marques][3] is a Professor at ESAD and is the responsible for the “Graphite”, which is an arts and crafts gallery. Before dividing its time between the academic and business worlds, for several years he specialized in Fashion Design, but he chose to expand his areas of expertise, in the search for new experiences, knowledge and adventures in the field of jewellery. José has a Master’s Degree in Product Design and a Bachelor’s Degree in Art (ESAD Matosinhos) and he tries, through the different activities that he carries out, to converge skills and promote interdisciplinarity. In his work he reproduces his Master’s thesis, using jewellery to pose questions that go beyond the shine of the jewel, trying to promote a reflection about aspects of the structuring of contemporary society and of the material culture.
Liliana Guerreiro

[Liliana Guerreiro][7] has a Bachelor’s Degree in Jewellery (ESAD Matosinhos). In 2004 she participated in the “Leveza” project, which was developed in a partnership between ESAD and the Travassos’ Gold Museum. It is during this working process that she met master goldsmiths Joaquim and Guilherme Rodrigues, with whom she still works today, developing research on the traditional Portuguese filigree. In 2007 she won, amongst other awards, the 1st International Filigree Award. Liliana frequently represents Portugal in international events, as in The 2008 International Exposition in Zaragoza, Spain, and the promotional video of the Portuguese presence in The 2010 International Exposition in Shanghai, China. In 2010 she was invited to be a part of the Destination Portugal exhibition at the MoMa - Museum of Modern Art, in New York and Tokyo. She takes part in international fairs and exhibitions and her work is available for sale in galleries and museum stores in several European countries, the United States and Japan.
Manuel Vilhena

[Manuel Vilhena][5] entered the world of jewellery in his teenage years, learning with Brazilian and Italian masters. He attended the “Contacto Directo” Jewellery School in Lisbon and finished his technical studies in 1989. Curious about the phenomenon that is contemporary jewellery, he travelled to Germany to study with Professor Skubic and in 1998 he completed a Master’s Degree in England’s Royal College of Art. This Master’s Degree led him to start his teaching career and in 2004 he was appointed to The Oslo National Academy of the Arts, in Norway, where he taught for six years. His work has been exhibited in several public and private collections and also in several books about contemporary jewellery. In 200 Manuel joins the National Art Science Academy where, along with colleagues and scientists, he develops and promotes a unified theory for art education.
PIN

A [PIN][6] is a non-profit cultural association, whose purpose is to promote contemporary jewellery, the exchange of information and experiences and the development of theoretical and practical projects in the scope of the Arts, and jewellery in particular. PIN was founded in 2004 (in 2014 will be 10 years old) and, since its foundation date, already 218 people have joined in as members.
