Social robots generated with artificial intelligence

*Can Artificial Intelligence design or code shapes and objects?

Shujoy Chakraborty, lecturer at the University of Madeira and an expert in 'shape-coding', led a workshop on Artificial Intelligence generative tools for a design project, in the scope of the Master in Product Design. The Midjourney, Dall.E and ChatGPT were the programs used to create educational robots for the pedagogy of the 21st century, with semi-human and pet shapes.

The programmes used use artificial intelligence to create images and text, based on visual and linguistic models that were later refined. Through this design exercise, 2nd year MA in Product Design students developed creative proposals, which were studied and analysed to determine the results of the Artificial Intelligence A tools in their design process. This analysis realised that the Artificial Intelligence output was as efficient as the human input. However, tactical intervention, the indication of precise text instructions and the combination of manual sketches improved their performance, yet the creativity of Artificial Intelligence has a fundamentally different expression to human creativity and did not fully understand the limitations of manufacturing.

Once students understood the weaknesses of these tools, they were able to steer productivity to the benefit of a good workflow and then apply abductive reasoning to create some unexpected proposals. Thus, Artificial Intelligence technologies apply deductive "reasoning" to recycle, repackage and extend the original human-generated content.
