
João Branco was a teacher, designer, researcher and began his teaching career at ESAD, having left a strong impact on generations of designers who went to his classes. The João Branco Award for Research in Design is an initiative of the University of Aveiro and the family of João Branco that contributes to the promotion and development of scientific research in any area of the Design field. ESAD is part of the jury.
The biennial award aims to distinguish a research work in the design field, made by Portuguese people or researchers living in Portugal, which became evident for its innovation, and has a cash value of five thousand euros. All projects must be submitted between 19 June and 9 September 2012.
The João Branco award is presented at ESAD on 28 May at 5pm, by his brother Vasco Branco, professor at the University of Aveiro, by Sergio Afonso, director of the Department of Design and Communication of ESAD; José Bártolo, president of the Scientific Commitee of ESAD and by designers Susana Barreto and Miguel Neiva, former students of João Branco in ESAD.
At the same day is released the latest book of the poet and professor at ESAD Rosa Alice Branco, dedicated to João Branco and entitled Concerto ao Vivo. The presentation includes the reading of poems accompanied by music.

João Branco began his teaching career at ESAD, teaching "Management and Marketing" and "Theory of Design and Visual Communication”. He also teaches at IADE, at Lusíada University, at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha and at the University of Aveiro, where he has an important role in the conception of the Design degree. Graduated in Law, with a Master’s Degree in Design and Marketing from the University of Minho and a Ph.D. in Design from the University of Aveiro, supervised by Rachel Cooper and Conceição Lopes, he worked as a consultant for the first and second Constitutional Governments, as Director of Communication at the Rodoviária Nacional, and as consultant of the Centro Português de Design. He gave many lectures in Portugal and abroad, led several research programs in the design field, promoted the use and management of design in Portuguese companies, was a jury in several awards, wrote many articles in professional journals and was a co-funder of the magazine "Comunicarte."
Rosa Alice Branco is a poet, essayist, translator, professor of "Theory of Perception" at ESAD, with a Ph. D. in Philosophy. As a researcher, she is a member of the ID+ (Instituto de Investigação em Design, Media e Cultura). She has published twelve volumes of poetry, including Soletrar o Dia (complete poetic work) and Gado do Senhor, which won in 2009 the prestigious award Espiral Maior de Poesia, being published in Portugal in 2011 by &ETC editions. She has poetry books published in Spain, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Venezuela (complete poetic work), Tunisia, Brazil, Corsica and Quebec; has also anthologies in many countries, including Russia, Latvia, Hungary, Macedonia, Germany, Italy and the United States, where her poems were published in over forty magazines.
