The set of posters This Is WGD '16, created for last year’s edition of the ESAD World Graphics Day were granted with the Merit Award at GRAPHIS Competition 2018 and are being published in the book GRAPHIS Poster Annual 2018.

The graphic approach inspires a visual dialog between the positive gestural expressions and the deconstructed flags, in an exploration of the non-verbal language. The first posters stress three different crisis in different countries, with consequences on a global scale: Panama Papers (economical), Brazil Impeachment (political), freedom of speech in Angola (social). This Is Not Panama, This Is Not Brazil and This Is Not Angola appear as statements that complement the message, promoting public debate concerning design’s social responsibility. The last poster, This Is (X) ESAD, expresses design’s power as a reaction to critical times.

Elias Marques and Sérgio Correia, both lecturers at ESAD and founders of the project, developed the prize-wining posters This Is Not America - T.I.N.A, an independent project of art & design. Founded in 2013 with the purpose of questioning the establishment’s ideals through the conception of spaces with subliminal messages and images and taking advantage of the elements related to the project’s identity, T.I.N.A is itself a statement.

GRAPHIS is an international bastion of excellency in the fields of design and visual arts that lists and assembles annually, among hundreds of proposals, the most significant and influent projects which, since 1994 and at a global level, are produced by the visual communication industry.

The ESAD World Graphics Day, held since 2011, joins designers/studios to celebrate the vitality and diversity of graphic design, to promote a forum for discussing ideas and processes surrounding design’s power and responsibility, which upholds itself, also, as an ideological reaction facing critical times.

In 2017, the World Graphics Day is celebrated at ESAD in partnership with the Faculty os Belas Artes in Porto, regarding the European Design Awards Festival, taking place this year in Porto.
