ESAD is present at Portugal Fashion | BLOOM FW22/23, with the with the fashion collections Fleeting Time and Mother Earth by Joana Guimarães and Kateryna Samoilenko, students of the Degree in Fashion Design. The BLOOM platform goal is to provide new creators with more informal, urban and multi-artistic shows.
Fleeting Time, by Joana Guimarães stems from a recurring sense of nostalgia experienced during a period of social isolation, she was inspired by artists such as Haejin Lee, Derick Melander and Pia Männikkö. The collection Mother Earth by Kateryna Samoilenko is inspired by her Ukrainian roots and this collection’s concept is based on an ancient myth about love and the rebirth of Mother Nature.
The students will present their collections on March 16, at 4:00pm.
Also Maria João Cunha, Marcelo Almiscarado, Carolina Sobral, Victor Huarte, David Catalán, Unflower Brand (Ana Sousa and Joana Braga) and [NOPIN][16] (Catarina Pinto), all ESAD alumni, will be present at the 50th edition of Portugal Fashion, on March 17 and 18.
It is worth remembering that Maria João Cunha presents the collection that earned her 1st prize in the 2nd edition of the New Creators PFN Competition, in 2020.

If on the one hand this feeling of nostalgia allows the construction of a meaningful life narrative, on the other hand it is natural that the impossibility of travelling in time and reliving certain moments is sometimes painful. The work of the artist Haejin Lee focuses precisely on the realisation of the vulnerability of human life in the face of the passage of time. Faced with the chaos of her compositions, deconstructed from curves and counter-curves of ribbons, there is a clear sense of discomfort and uneasiness as one senses that the sculptures could fall apart at any moment. The collection has as reference not only the work of Haejin Lee, but also the association between the work of Derick Melander, whose drawings demonstrate the evolution of garments with the growth of the human body and the installation 'Dejá Vu' by Pia Männikkö.
- Joana Guimarães
The return of the goddess of life, after being kidnapped by her brother, is celebrated even today through a festival called Malanka. Thus, the premise of the collection is the renewal of nature. The motto for its development stems from the traditional costumes of the festival, often made of weeds and old fabrics, making us aware of the environmental issues present in our daily lives. As such, the collection portrays the past and the future, both in collective and individual terms. In essence, it is a reflection on rebirth and renewal within ourselves.
