The Porto.ModaPortugal contest, organized by CENIT - Associative Center for Textile Intelligence, is dedicated to the celebration of young designers in the Fashion Design Competition, challenging the apparel industry and the European fashion. Portugal, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom are the seven countries in competition. Each country chooses three representatives linked to an educational institution.
ESAD was one of three invited schools and Marcelo Almiscarado, a finalist student of the Degree in Fashion Design, participates in the contest of young European designers with the Torto collection. Marcelo won the award Por País. The awards ceremony took place on 5 December at Alfândega do Porto.
Torto a collection based on the physical deformations caused by the motor deficiency Pé Boto. The theme is metaphorically explored in a photographic narrative, which is based on two individuals who recognize in their bodies different parts from those around them, starting with an aesthetic reconstruction based on textile materials regarded as prosthesis. The silhouettes are worked instinctively, showing asymmetry and deformation, created through elements such as elastics, holes with strings and velcro. The exterior parts are made of technical materials and thermocoupled. The most fragile and delicate interior pieces, made in a wide taffeta structure, are created through the handmade technique of weaving, contributing to the symbolism of the metamorphosis between the old, coarse and functional, in association with the orthopedic footwear, and with the new, delicate and decorative, in association with what is restricted inside the orthopedic accessories.
