The course is an example of what learning should be. A physical and cultural environment that stimulates the creative and intellectual environment. A team of experienced educators who love what they do. A group of participants from around the world and from different backgrounds who share the same interests and passion. The result is an exclusive community of like-minded people who are there because they want to be, because they want a new experience, because they want to meet new people, because they're eager to learn new things and above all because they want to have a good time doing these things. That's the experience we offer, it's quite unique. So if you want to stimulate your ideas, learn from the best, have great food and wine and have some fun, come and join us." Andrew Howard
Taught by leading design professionals and educators from Europe and the US, the second edition of Porto Design Summer School Editorial Course is a unique opportunity to study graphic design within the setting of one of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful cities.
The Course is organised by Idiomatic (from Studio Andrew Howard), in partnership with ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos, one of Portugal's leading design education institutes, in the context of ESAD's MA in Communication Design, coordinated by Andrew Howard.
Principle tutors are Hamish Muir, Jessica Helfand and Andrew Howard. Staff also include Ana Raposo (assistant tutor), Manuel Loff (guest tutor in Porto History) and Nuno Grande (guest tutor in Porto architecture).
Focusing on editorial design and typography, this intensive two week practice-based course also pays special attention to the city’s rare heritage in vintage shop signage and other forms of vernacular lettering. Benefitting from the expertise and skills of the workshop tutors, participants will explore the creative possibilities of editorial design, examining topics such as narrative structure, navigation, typographic systems, hierarchy and composition, as well as editing and notions of authorship.
The editorial course sets out a practical outcome for each participant in the form of an individual editorial project that develops personal interests and that draws inspiration from the city. The aim is to expand technical and conceptual skills and thus move participants closer to finding a unique outlook and signature as a graphic designer.
Last summer's course welcomed students and professionals from the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, Turkey, India and Thailand.
The course has European accreditation of 4 ECTS credits. Applications are now open; the deadline for submission is May 4th 2014.
