To think about the new millennium and the place of design in a framework of change, with special attention to Portuguese design, is what the 1st edition of Porto Design Biennale intends to be. An unparalleled event in Portugal, comissioned by the municipalities of Porto and Matosinhos and organized by esad-idea, Research in Design and Art. The event will take place at the end of 2019.

Porto Design Biennale intends to promote, revitalize and internationalise the thinking and practice in design. The first edition will take place between September and December 2019 in several locations of Matosinhos and Porto. Around the Post Millennium Tension theme, the programme proposes a broad reflection on emerging transformations that mark the new millennium and the place of design in this framework of change. Comissioned by the Porto City Council and Matosinhos City Council, this event is organized by the esad-idea, Research in Design and Art, the investigation centre of ESAD/College of Art and Design.

In the Porto Design Biennale'19 programme, Portuguese design produced in the new millennium will be highlighted. Exploring different formats, contemporary Portuguese design will be widely shown in its various disciplinary aspects and in its multiple functional, conceptual and procedural approaches. The contextual dimension of Portuguese design will be analysed and debated, looking at the links between design, industry, education, culture and politics.   Taking post-millennium tensions as its motto, there will be an international conference to discuss the theme of the Biennale from various contemporary theory and critical practice perspectives: from speculative design to forensic architecture. An international workshop for young curators will enable the presentation of radical new forms of curatorial discourse on design to be presented.   Around the Guest Country (Italy), a programme will be built that, while revisiting the history of Italian design, looks at the developments in Italian design culture.

Confronting the tensions of the new millennium, the first edition of Porto Design Biennale seeks to analyse the current disciplinary configuration of design. The reflection on the one hand takes into account the historical perspective and tension relationships, between remoteness and closeness, contemporary design and the model of modern design that was in effect until the end of the millennium; on the other hand, it is important to identify and evaluate the forms and functions of design produced in the first two decades of the current millennium, as well as to reflect on the social efficiency of design and the new connections that arise from the economic, technological, political, cultural and environmental situations.
