The first edition of Porto Design Biennale will take place between September and December 2019 and aims to reinforce the role of the north region of Portugal as an organiser of large international design events. The event will be promoted by Porto City Council and Matosinhos City Council and will take place in several locations across the two cities.

The Biennale has two main aims. The first aim is to be an event, organised biannually, to promote design culture, its public debate and the production of critical knowledge based in Portugal but with international repercussions. The second aim is to develop continuous research and dissemination of Portuguese and international design, enhancing the fusion of resources between disciplines, designer, enterprises, academia, industries and diverse social sectors.

The cities of Porto and Matosinhos have joined efforts to promote this ambitious event. Both councils have spearheaded the promotion of architecture and design though a consistent action within the quality of urban space and cultural programming. Conference cycles such as Personal Views and Fórum do Futuro, cultural institutions and spaces such as Casa do Design, Casa da Arquitetura, Museu da Fundação de Serralves, Casa da Música and several council spaces featuring cultural programming including contemporary art, theatre, dance, cinema and literature characterise the urban territory as a space of cultural diversity and vitality. The councils have regularly hosted renowned design events in recent years, such as AGI Open (Porto, 2010), the European Academy of Design Conference (Porto, 2010), national and international design exhibitions at Quadra gallery and Casa do Design at Matosinhos, the exhibitions of the Experimentadesign Biennale in 2015 or the European Design Awards (Porto, 2017).

The active academia, particularly ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design, Faculdade de Belas Artes and Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto, or the non-institution editorial design course at Porto Summer School (coordinated by designer Andrew Howard) and the profuse design and architecture studios assure the necessary critical mass to these two cities.
