At the beginning of the second half of the 70’s Jean Baudrillard said: We are at the end of production. This formula coincides, in the western world, with the enunciation of the commercial law of value, that is to say, with the realm of the political economy. Baudrillard also declared the begging of the political economy critique, whose reference is the social production and the mode of production.

The subject of this PLI arte & design magazine issue is the political economy critique, the form that it currently takes, the processes that develop it in the field of contemporary art and design.

PLI is a contemporary design magazine. What, however, does the adjective contemporary signify, that we associate with design and which we seem to believe is self-referencing? Could there be such a thing as a contemporary state, a spirit of the time, that differentiates it from other periods in history? Today, we are all postproducers. Lady Gaga is one possible model. Cultural production is, essentially, a production of meaning. A process of puzzling. The author is a narrator. The narrative increasingly hypertextual.
