If the attire is seen as the affirmation of an identity, the costume – the character’s way of dressing – appears as a symbolic means of transmitting the character’s story and personality. Each costume has its origin within a dramaturgy, becoming a part of the plot but also creating the identity of the character that wears it. Thus, it cannot be observed just as a product of design or a work of art.
The exhibition Pieces in Pieces | Figuring and wearing seeks to rescue the plastic-symbolic component of 12 shows performed at the Teatro Nacional de São João, with the purpose of revealing the place of design and of the symbolic in the character’s construction in every scene, presenting costumes, scene photography, costume drawing, posters of the spectacles and projection of teasers.
