The Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize was created by the Porto City Council as a tribute to the former Councillor for Culture, who served from September 2013 to November 11, 2015.
The prize, aimed at international artists under 40 years of age, has a monetary value of 25,000 euros and the winner will present a solo exhibition in 2018, at the Porto Municipal Gallery.
For the jury of the first edition of the Prize, the Department of Culture invited João Laia, Julião Sarmento, Meg Stuart and Vicente Todolí. Afterwards, the jury nominated 16 curators - Hans Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Galleries, UK), Elena Filipovic (Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland), Nancy Spector (Guggenheim Museum, USA), Catherine Wood (Tate Modern, UK), Benjamin Weil (Centro Botín, Spain) and Venus Lau (OCAT Shenzen, China) - each curator nominated three artists, in a total of 48 guests.
The graphic and web design projects for the Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize were developed by esad-idea, ESAD's research centre.
