Palacete do Lima, Uma Proposta de Remodelação [A Remodelling Proposal] is a project developed within de curricular disciplines Projeto II and Sistemas Construtivos of the Interior Design bachelor course of ESAD, on view at Académico Futebol Clube in Porto.

Palacete do Lima, a building from the 20th century that accommodates Académico Futebol Clube, has been changing according to the needs of its functional programmes, without a generator and structural programme that allowed a functional answer but at the same time kept its inner spatial and formal quality.

It was thus proposed to the 3rd grade students of the Interior Design Bachelor course, with coordination of the professors Désirée Pedro, Rui Canela and Paulo Seco, to study a new programmatic redistribution and to present a project that reflected this new functional an spatial reorganization, resolving in both floors the vertical accesses. Mainly it was intended to maintain and/or to re-establish anew formal order, bringing to the inside the old splendour of the outside. We have thus several proposals that came from different preconditions but that have in common the will of clarifying spatial hierarchies and qualify and characterize obsolete spaces at the moment.

Intervene is to build, is to destroy and to rebuild. It is to modify a singularity inserted in a built tissue with which it will maintain close relations and relations of contextualization still in continuity or already in breakdown, because it kept as a resultant body of an époque that doesn’t reflect itself in the surroundings. Physically, socially and culturally.

For a remodelling to be consequent it is necessary to identify the cultural, patrimonial and social values in which the edification inscribes itself. For that it is necessary a great availability for the diagnosis and analyses, in order to clarify the subjective weight of the criteria and selections to make while maintaining and endowing of new programmes and infrastructures the lifecycle of the building.

The capacity of a building that suffered intervention not loosing its singularity reveals itself by the way our intervention respects constructive and formal systems already existent. This respect is not possible copying insightfully but adding value with the new intervention, in which there are a dialogue between the pre-existence and the proposal in order to clarify new ways of using and new functions.

The arbitrary modification results from a lack of study and analysis of the constructive, functional and formal systems that gave origin to the object of intervention.
