The exhibition Motos de Portugal, curated by Emanuel Barbosa, designer and professor of ESAD College of Art and Design, aims to enable an easy understanding of the national production of motorcycles and mopeds, by creating a route over time, framing national historical landmarks with the history of the motorcycle in the twentieth century in the world and in Portugal, providing a panoramic view of the characteristics of these vehicles and their use. The exhibition was thought of as a cultural experience whose wide variety reflects our own society.
The exhibition is organized by Matosinhos City Council and esad—idea, Research in Design and Art and takes place in the Casa do Design de Matosinhos.
The Casa do Design de Matosinhos intends to establish itself as a central space for exhibition, dissemination and critical production of knowledge in design with a focus on Portuguese design. Alongside a regular program - centered on exhibitions that stimulate reflection and debate on the culture of contemporary design or, in another perspective, that investigate, collect and preserve historical knowledge linked to the evolution of design in its various areas - a permanent collection will be created and a collection of documents that enhance the research and dissemination of knowledge in design. This project is the result of a partnership between Matosinhos City Council and ESAD IDEA and is intended to be based on an openness to different areas, themes and publics, but also for the receptivity to new proposals and future partners, in order to reinforce the dimension of a space that is of national and international scope and relevance.
From a leisure vehicle to a work vehicle, from a technological exercise to an indispensable tool for the performance of activities essential to the survival of entire populations, the motorcycle has morphed and become an indispensable element in our contemporary society.
The national motorcycle industry takes its first steps in the early twentieth century, accompanies, with ups and downs, the whole development of the century and practically extinguishes by the end of the century.
The motorcycle, initially a phenomenon of elites, ends up becoming more democratic and reaches the apogee of national production between the 60s and 80s, with the era of motorized, nothing less than a motorcycle with a small displacement (up to 50cc) which met workers' mobility needs as the only motor vehicle with costs compatible with low wages and low literacy rates.
The Portuguese society, due to its characteristics, led to the appearance of several manufacturers, some of whom were successful in the international market. The design of their models, in most cases, adapts to the national reality what was developed abroad.
The research work developed by Emanuel Barbosa made it possible to gather and present a number of documentary material (graphic, video), some of it unpublished. Catalogs, documents, vintage photos - will be some of the documents that the visitor will have the opportunity to see.
During the exhibition, a program of parallel activities will allow interactions with specialists, collectors, authors and actors of the national industry.
