Imprimere - Art and Process in the 250 Years of the National Press presents itself as an extensive documentary show, bringing together instruments, machines, technologies and artifacts that illustrate the history of graphic production in Portugal, from the Royal Printing to the present.

Imprimere - from the Latim Print, mark, etch, sink - explores in a didactic way the main processes, techniques and technologies of graphic arts implied in the production of the book, from seven perspectives: Paper, Type, Typography, Calcography, Serigraphy, Lithography and Binding.

At a time when artisanal graphic techniques have become an alternative to the current mass production systems, the aim is to rediscover the technologies that marked the execution of the book, in a parallel with the history of the National Press, which actively monitored and contributed to the evolution of graphic arts in Portugal.

The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Matosinhos, by the esad-idea, Research in Design and Art and by the National Press-Casa da Moeda, as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the National Press.

The curatorship of the exhibition is by Rúben Dias, typographer, type designer and lecturer at ESAD, and by Sofia Meira, graphic designer and head of ESAD's Typography Workshop, both of them are developing research in this area.

This exhibition seeks to recover the knowledge once passed between the teacher and the student, both in a perspective of rediscovery and reinterpretation for the present. The physical space and the amplitude of the estate to be exhibited require a selection of contents, seeking, through the narrative of the construction of the book and the inescapable path of the National Press, to demonstrate the relevance of the various technical processes for the graphic arts in general, from the pre-industrial era to the computer to plate.
