From 13 to 17 March, regarding the Master in Interior Design, ESAD conducts the workshop Furniture Remade 3, guided by the Italian architect Paolo Deganello.
The 3rd edition of this workshop intends, equally, the re-drawing of a set of furniture pieces, unused and/or destined to be destroyed, attempting to give them a new life and, in some cases, a new function. The goal is to value the potential of transformation and update of the object, applying the principle of parsimony. With minimum intervention and resources, the goal is to obtain a new object, updating its aesthetics and function but conserving its identity.
The old pieces of furniture were provided by RAR Imobiliária and Maiambiente, aiming at its renewal and updating.
Born in 1940, Paolo Deganello studied architecture at the University of Florence. In 1966, he joined Andrea Branzi, Gilberto Corretti, and Massimo Morozzi at the Archizoom Associati Foundation, in tribute to a British group of architects, known as Archigram and to the magazine Zoom. Archizoom was a part of the radical design movement in Italy, projecting anti-design furniture, such as the counter set Safari ou the floor lamp San Remo (both for Poltronova, in 1968). In 1973 he collaborated with Gilberto Corretti in the project Archizoom, a line of office chairs fabricated by Marcatré. With the dissolution of Archizoom Associati he dedicated himself to teaching at the University of Florence and at London Architectural Association. He investigated with his students the quality and comfort requirements for the furniture for seating, study that led to the development of the AEO chair (Cassina, 1973). In 1981, at his studio in Florence, he projected the asymmetric chair Torso (Cassina, 1982). In 1987 shows his chair Documenta at documenta 8, in Kassel. In addition, in 1991 projects the pair of chairs, Re and Regina, with frame and steel legs, wicker seats and leather backs. Paolo Deganello showed his work in numerous exhibits, including Italy: A Nova Paisagem Doméstica, the exhibition set by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in 1972. He is an invited lecturer for the Master in Interior Design at ESAD since 2010 and responsible for the investigation unit in Architecture and sustainable living.
