The fifth edition of ESAD World Graphics Day is scheduled for April 30th, at tConstantino Nery Cine-Theatre, in Matosinhos.
After establishing itself as a reference in the celebration of national graphic design, the event now intends to open itself to all areas of design, promoting a forum for discussing ideas and processes, around the power and responsibility of design.
ESAD World Graphics Day takes place at the Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery, with the support of the City Council of Matosinhos, based on brief presentations by the studios and guest designers.
This year's guests are Alda Rosa, André Santos, Another Collective, António Queirós, Atelier d'Alves, Hot Cakes, Cândida Ruivo, Fernando Brízio, João Machado, Laro Vilas Boas, Mariana, A Miserável, Maria Gambina, Manuel Peres, Miguel Ministro, Playme, Sofia Miranda, White Studio, Zé Cardoso.
The event is curated by José Bártolo, researcher, curator and president of the Scientific Council of ESAD Matosinhos. The graphic image of the 2014 edition is by the former student and current professor at ESAD, João Castro.
Admission is free, subject to room capacity.

Alda Rosa
She was born in 1936, she studied painting at the ESBAL/Current Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon before graduating in graphic design from the Ravensbourne College of Art and Design; she was part of the organising committee of the first Portuguese design exhibitions and the installation committee of the Portuguese Design Centre; she is a founding member of the Portuguese Association of Designers; she has devoted herself mainly to graphic design but also to furniture, scenography and costumes for ballet and cinema.
André Santos
He was born in Porto, he is the resident designer of the theatre company Cabeças no Ar and Pés na Terra; he edits "Cá Se Fazem…" and "Nem Tudo que Reluz é Ouro", both self-published in a collaborative way; they highlighted him with a vest and hair gel in the last edition of the News Magazine of 2013.
Another Collective
It is a multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2012; based in Matosinhos, it works in the most varied areas, from Corporate Identity to Web Design; its process tools focus on experimentation and concept exploration, and the search for new working methods and areas of interest make the studio maintain an updated view of design.
António Queirós
He collaborates with Souto Moura since 1994 in editorial and signage projects; he developed with Carrilho da Graça the design of the exhibition Do Palácio de Belém for the Presidency of the Republic; he is a guest professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and develops in his studio identity projects, packaging, editorial, among other areas of intervention.
Atelier d'Alves Design studio based in Porto, led by Sérgio Alves, graduated in communication design by ESAD Matosinhos, with a focus on culture, at the level of theater, architecture, dance and literature; projects for Teatrando (2011, 2012, 2013), collaboration with the magazines Dédalo and Drama and JUP - Jornal Universitário do Porto, among others, stand out. Bolos Quentes
A design studio founded by four graduates in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto. Since its foundation, Albino Tavares, Duarte Amorim, Miguel Marinheiro and Sérgio Couto have developed several projects in multiple areas: cultural, artistic, large scale institutions to micro scale. Currently the Bolos Quentes are Duarte Amorim and Sérgio Couto.
Cândida Teresa Ruivo
She was co-founder of the BLITZ newspaper and a mock up artist, being maquettist and graphic director of the first 17 years of this publication; she is a professor of Communication Design at the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa; she likes books, magazines and newspapers, mainly those made in paper.
Fernando Brízio
He studied Equipment Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon; has designed objects and spaces for various organizations; is a professor at ESAD Caldas da Rainha and was a visiting professor at ECAL Lausanne and HFG Karlsruhe; has been invited as a lecturer and member of juries in Portugal and abroad; his work is regularly exhibited and published internationally, and is part, among others, of the collection of the MUDE Lisboa and the IMA Indianapolis Museum of Art.
João Machado
With an extensive work as an illustrator and editorial designer, he graduated in Sculpture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto, where he was also a teacher; he has several posters, books, stamps and published works, the target of numerous awards, such as the Excellence Award Icograda in three editions, the Aziago International Award in 2004 and several nominations in the prestigious GRAPHIS; established his studio in Oporto in 1982, working for clients as diverse as the Oporto, Lisbon, Almada or Guimarães chambers, the CTT, the Belém Cultural Centre, the Fundação Oriente or the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Arch Brito, Real Companhia Velha or Cinanima.
Manuel Peres
He started his professional activity in 1955 as a lithography designer at Oficinas Papelaria Fernandes; with a vast experience in creative direction he later worked for Leo Burnet, PARK and FOX, among other agencies. Among his most relevant projects are those developed for TMN, Mercedes, VARIG and Wolkswagen; since 2013 he has been a Craft Master at BARLISBOA Bomtempo Anahory and Ralha.
Maria Gambina
She is the coordinator of ESAD's Degree in Fashion Design, a course in which she teaches the subject of Fashion Design; she has a degree in Fashion Design from CITEX, from her vast and diversified career as a fashion designer, several participations in national and international events stand out, as well as obtaining several first prizes in design competitions.
Mariana A Miserável
Illustrator, she graduated in graphic design by ESAD Caldas da Rainha, she was an illustration director at JUP newspaper, develops and participates in numerous exhibitions and publications. She has featured and been interviewed by several publications (Parq magazine, Visão magazine, Nicotine and Caffeine, Portuguese Gallery, Magnética Magazine, We Blog You, juxtapoz, BOOOOOM, it's nice that, among others).
Miguel Ministro
He graduated in communication design from ESAD Matosinhos, he was born in Lisbon, holding markers and reams of photocopying paper; nowadays he works mainly with books, among covers, paginations and illustrations and, when there is time left, he participates in
exhibitions or organize them, as has been the case of UIVO - Mostra de Ilustração do Fórum da Maia.
Playme
A studio based in Castelo Branco, wich manages projects in a simple and direct way and its portfolio includes clients such as Eduardo Salvio (SLB), FNE, Cultura Vibra - Câmara Municipal de Castelo Branco, Maicon Roque (FCP) and Vinhos Quinta do Monte Bravo.
Sofia Miranda
She was born in Porto, where she studied Communication Design at ESAD Matosinhos. She went to Barcelona for a Postgraduate in Editorial Design at ELISAVA. In her hometown she co-founded the Kong Studio with Luis Dourado, she did an internship at White Studio and currently works in a world between graphic design and fashion, as a senior graphic designer at Parfois. In parallel, she is responsible for the creative direction / graphic design of webzine bodyspace.net.
Zé Cardoso
He graduated in Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 2008, he works in design and illustration since 2006. He participates in several publications and national and international exhibitions; co-founder of the collective Salao Coboi in 2010; author of the website A Thousand Faces Staring Back At You in 2012. He was a co-founder of the online music publisher Gentle Records in 2013; at the moment is dedicated to the illustration project Tomba Lobos and the carpet brand GUR.
White Studio
Multidisciplinary design studio located in Porto and more recently with teams in London and Santiago, Chile. It in areas such as print, editorial, packaging and labels, signage and even interiors. It values the construction of projects on a solid conceptual basis, developed in a close and inclusive way with the client, so that each piece is a unique project.
