One of the most fascinating things about the web and the internet is how naturally it fits into mankind's most basic desires. How it fulfils, amplifies and creates needs that are a big part of our interconnected lives. In a world where design and engineering play a big role on our evolution, it's important for a community of makers to gather and discuss these matters every once in a while. Not only to pause, rest and refresh, but to discover one's role in society as a creator of online connections.

ESAD Web Talks is back in 2013 for an afternoon filled with a new series of fresh conversations with 4 guest speakers. The perfect timing to make new friends working in related trades and to gather with the web community for a well spent afternoon.

This Is For Everyone — Jeremy Keith

Making websites used to be a relatively simple affair: just learn some HTML and away you go. These days it seems like there are new tools, libraries, frameworks and languages bombarding us every day. There's a danger that this rising barrier to entry might be at odds with the fundamentally open and democratic nature of the web. The web has democratised publishing, allowing anyone to share ideas with a global audience. But if the means of web production shift to a powerful elite, then who will take care of our cultural legacy? Websites and documents are disappearing down the digital memory hole every day. But we can change that.

Revolutionising GOV.UK — Paul Annett

How are a handful of web nerds using good digital design to save the UK government billions of dollars each year? Paul Annett, Creative Lead at the UK's Government Digital Service, will discuss the challenges they've faced, and the design principles which underpin their success in revolutionising the way people interact with public services.

Living Beyond the Comfort Zone — Ben Bodien

It can be easy to slip into an overly focused, tunnel visioned career and definition of your professional self, specialising in one and only one field. Falling into this trap not only limits your ability to fulfil your complete potential, but it also shuts you off from a higher-level view of your chosen speciality. Enjoy a delectable platter of stories and tips on embracing things that scare you, working more efficiently, broadening your abilities and thinking more carefully about how you define yourself.

My secret is honesty — Laura Kalbag

I live my life out loud on the web. I broadcast my love, I tell the world when I feel down and I overreact very quickly and very loudly, without thinking about the consequences of my actions. But, for all the fights it's got me into, I believe my honesty is the making of my self-confidence and my business. It's the key to work I love and the most meaningful client relationships. I'll talk less about business (I'm more designer than entrepreneur) and more about how easy it is to build trust just by being human.
