Managing partner of the company José Gigante-Arquitecto Lda., his work was honoured with numerous awards, including the Prémio Gulbenkian de Arquitectura (1986), Prémio Nacional de Arquitectura AAP / SEC (1987), Award Architécti / CCB (1994), Prémio INH (1997), Prémio Municipal de Arquitectura Januário Godinho (1998) and Prémio Europeu de Arquitectura AIA-Europe (2001).

José Gigante was also a finalist at the following awards: Internazionale di Architettura Andrea Palladio (1991), Iberfad - Alejandro de la Sota (1996), FAD de Arquitectura (2000), Secil de Arquitectura (1996 and 1998), Europeu de Arquitectura Mies van der Rohe (1999) and Arquitectura Acensores Enor (2005 and 2009).

He has works and projects exhibited and published in several countries, namely Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Spain, USA, France, Greece, Holland, Italy, Portugal, England and Switzerland.

José Gigante graduated from the Oporto School of Fine Arts in 1981 and was a professor at this school and at the Faculty of Architecture of the Oporto University until 1998. Since then he became a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Coimbra and, since 2010 he is a visiting professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Oporto University.
