Gordon Young tackles issues of context and sustainability and challenges scale with his art works. He has extensively worked with architects, typographers, landscape architects, writers, historians, scientists, school children, graphic designers and boxers thus giving him a strong insight into collaborative practice. His use of materials and techniques vary from project to project but the ideas are often inspired by the local environment and people. As pieces they both entertain and challenge the observer.
His lecture Just for the English to see. Searching for a horn on a horse's head. Who does not have a dog, shall hunt with a cat happens after the workshop Obsessions, held at ESAD from 23 to 25th of May.
In this workshop, students are going to make a museum of collections. The whole city is the hunting/ gathering ground for individuals actions. Some imagination, wit, energy, sensitivity and vision will be required, occasionally very little money might be required (anyone with a fat wallet trying to buy their way into the emerging museum will be laughed at - cheeky money!). The presentational skills will be kept simple, the "stuff" has to speak for itself. The physicality of material away from the mac screen is a point. The confection of visions is another.
