Russel Bestley is director of the MA in Graphic Design at the London College of Communication and co-author of several publications, including Visual Research: An Introduction to Research Methodologies in Graphic Design (AVA Academia, 2004, second edition revised in 2011), Up Against the Wall: International Poster Design (RotoVision, 2002) and Experimental Layout (RotoVision, 2001).
His most recent book, The Art of Punk: The Illustrated History of Punk Rock Design (Omnibus Press, 2012), co-authored with Alex Ogg, comprises a collection of over 900 images - from concert posters to badges - that represent the aesthetics of the 1970s punk movement and the revolutionary way in which bands created art to shock and surprise.
Over the years, Russel has published several articles on research methods in graphic design, information design, and British popular culture in publications including Eye Magazine, Zed, Émigré, and the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World.
The Open Talk that Russel Bestley is bringing to ESAD on 10 January is on the theme of Signs of Distress: Analytical Methods and Punk Graphic Design and will take place in ESAD's auditorium on 10 January at 5:00 pm.
The ESAD Open Talks are part of the programme of lectures and intensive workshops of the Master's in Communication Design.
