Duets is an exhibition taking place under the umbrella of the Art On Chairs event, to be held in Paredes, Portugal, from September to November 2012.

The exhibition consists of 11 original chairs, each arising from a meeting between a personality of international standing and a designer who will create a chair in their image. The chair, as an icon of design, carries with it a group of values that will be an expression of the way in which the guest personality inhabits it.

The minimum commitment demanded of the guest will be to make themselves available for a meeting/interview with a designer, so that the cultural and material universe that surrounds them can be explored, as these are the elements on which this project is based. The entire process, from initial interview to final production, will be photographed. These unique moments will be recorded by a photographer, and a creative narrative will be related by a writer.

This experience will lead to the production of an object that is territorialized. This territorialization will be a translation of the cultural heritage and life experience of both the guest and the designer who interprets it, as well as “territoriality” as it relates to the city of Paredes and its manufacturing culture, a culture that encourages and esteems the integration of manual skills with mass production and the intensive usage of wood and its derivatives.

An idea for the world in a chair is the challenge issued to each duet. A limited edition of three pieces will then be produced for each individual project. Five examples of each chair will be produced, which will be numbered and signed.
