Design workshop – amorim top series & churchill’s

Design Workshop - Amorim Top Series & Churchill's is the second of three workshops that integrate the PiCoDe - International Collective Design Project.

The workshop took place at ESAD, between 15 and 27 May 2022, with the participation of teachers and students from Portugal, Poland, Turkey, Brazil, Belgium and the USA. With the aim of developing a collaborative project, the participants worked with [Amorim Top Series][2] to design and prototype a new product made of natural cork, and with [Churchill's][3], in order to meet the needs of a local port wine producer, by researching solutions for the promotion of their products.

At the end of the workshop, the students held an exhibition reflecting the design process, presenting the prototypes developed for two new products: GRICHER EARTH and DIAMOND TREE.

GRICHER EARTH was the design developed for Churchill's wine cellar. Its shape recalls the vineyard land located west of Porto, within the basin of the Douro River, lit by a projector that showed the movements of the river between the slopes.

DIAMOND TREE was a design conceived for portability and its shape was based on Churchill's diamond label. Different colours and textures of cork were used for the bar in a lightweight structure.

To accompany the two projects, new colours, materials and finishes and visual effects were suggested for the display structures, in addition to two prototypes of cork aprons for the staff to use in the promotional spaces.

This workshop is part of a research project involving Lodz University of Technology (Poland), ESAD (Portugal), Eskisehir Osmangazi University (Turkey), the College for Creative Studies (USA) and Escuela Superior de Diseño de La Rioja (Spain), with the support of the ERASMUS+ programme. Students who complete the workshop will receive an international certificate from ESAD and the ERASMUS+ programme.
