Mar Shopping, IKEA and ESAD joined to lunch a competition in which ESAD Interior Design Bachelor finalist students had to plan, project and implement 10 sitting areas in the biggest shopping center of the north of the country.

To stimulate among the students the ability to respond to concrete challenges, to prepare their inclusion in the labor market and to develop the creative process in Design are the competition’s main goals, involving Interior Design 3rd grade students. MAR Shopping has 10 resting and leisure areas that the students have to remodel, using pieces, materials and elements of IKEA.

From the 15 submitted projects, João Oliveira, Ivo Falcão, Mariana Pinhão, João Pedro Neves and Soraia Marques were the selected authors.

The work of João Oliviera and Ivo Falcão, the grand winners, will give rise to the new leisure areas of the shopping center, with the remodeling starting in September. The five winner students will be awarded two years of the Interior Design MA tuition fees (the 1st year paid by MAR Shopping and the 2nd year paid by ESAD).

The winners were selected by a jury that includes José António Simões, director of ESAD, Sandra Monteiro, general manager of MAR Shopping, Maria Milano, director of the Interior Design MA and professor of the curricular discipline Projeto, Désirée Pedro, professor of Projeto, Paulo Seco, professor of Sistemas Construtivos, and Nini Andrade Silva, interior designer and patron of the initiative.

This project has also a strong and important component of social responsibility, once, thanks to Nini Andrade da Silva, the store IKEA Matosinhos and MAR Shopping will donate furniture of the Swedish brand to the Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Funchal Garouta do Calhau, an institution of social solidarity that supports social and vulnerable groups in Madeira.
