Cólofon - 500 Capas de Livros Portugueses presents an introductory exhibition to the history of graphic design in Potugal. The exhibition will take place in Quinta de Santiago, Matosinhos.
Cólofon introduces the history of graphic design and illustration in Portugal throughout the 20th century, departing from a selection of 500 book covers.
The show displays the quality work of Portuguese capistas (book cover authors) and the diversity of the explored formal and technical solutions, through works signed by Bernardo Marques, Victor Palla, Sebastião Rodrigues, João Botelho amongst many others, whose work became publically available between 1900 and 2000.
The installation project aims to take advantage of the museum space at Quinta de Santiago, an historical building constructed in the late 19th century and restored by Fernando Távora in 1968.
The exhibition is organized by Matosinhos Citty Hall and Museu da Quinta de Santiago, in partnership with ESAD IDEA — Research in Design and Art, the research department of ESAD — College of Art and Design Matosinhos. It integrates the program of the 9th edition of Lev — Literatura em Viagem, an international travel writing meeting organized by the Matosinhos City Hall that will take place between the May 8 and 11 this year.
Cólofon is the last printed element in the book’s interior, the work’s finish. It indicates the quality of the paper (kind, supplier, weight) and the typography of the texts’ composition, and may also include information about the author, type of edition, publishing date and place, printing process, printing company and number of prints. It follows the tradition of the manuscript practice, observed in Egyptian papyrus and maintained by mediaeval scribes, until the coming of the printed book, in the 15th century, and represents the editor’s brand of prestige.
