The title of the collection — Design e — evokes the expansive and relational dimension of Design. Converging, "Design" with the "e" creates a productive dialogue that is by tendency infinite. The Design, as a ground breaking discipline between a growing number of knowledge fields, can be a gathering and diversifying agent, enlarging and deepening the communication networks, and generating synapses of quality. These depend on the interrogations and on the choices that the design operates. Thus, we must question ourselves on who makes the choices and on which grounds they are made, once each path has a vision of the world that, according to the specificities of each designer, will express itself in his/her life and work. This collection wants to be one of the multiple ways in which the design writes itself, each volume revealing the incision of a world view, aimed not only at designer’s readers but also at the singularity of each reader, since the Design e collection unfolds in a plurality of visions of the world. The editorial activity of ESAD had already started with sporadic publications, a few systematic ones, as it is the case of the collection conceived and run by Maria Milano that revealed several architects in books with the seal of Quidinovi, distributed weekly with Público newspaper, as well as PLI arte & design, magazine edited by José Bártolo e Sérgio Afonso.

ESAD ventures now into a new editorial perspective, a collection of books with the target of finding the synergies, the convergences, the bridges between Design and the various fields of knowledge. In a partnership with the publisher Verso da História, the collection in directed by and Rosa Alice Branco.

Victor Margolin’s choice to initiate the collection Design e has a purpose, since in his texts the ethical and social concerns that have been guiding his life and work are evident. Thus, through first choice, it will also be made clear the position on the role of the designer in relation to the alterity.

According to Rosa Alice Branco *this book — *Design e Risco de Mudança* [Design and Risk of Change] — asks us multiple questions that are related with the title of the book itself: What is the risk that Victor Margolin refers to? In fact, the author place us in the heart of all risks, especially the ones that we must take as citizens-designers, confronting the risks that the power– in its multiple faces – wants to avoid in order to keep the status quo that favors it. It is to the designer, in a broad sense, to take the fundamental role in the emergent change, once the globally waste of social goods cannot wait any good resolution from the entities that are promoting it*. She adds: *The interview with which Hugo Branco and I challenge Victor Margolin stresses even more the fact that designers handle a relevant role, either in the elimination of the social obesity that Margolin refers to, or in the developing process of a sustainable entrepreneurship. The most exiting thing, as Eduardo Côrte-Real notes on the preface to this book, is that it is a feasible utopia*.

Victor Margolin is a coeditor of the design’s academic newspaper Design Issues and has broad work published about different topics of design, having been invited to lecture in conferences, universities and art schools around the world. Some books written, edited and coedited by Victor Margolin include Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion, WW II, The Struggle for Utopia: Rodchenko, Lissitzky, Moholy-Nagy, 1917-1936, Design Discourse, Discovering Design, The Idea of Design, The Designed World, The Politics of the Artificial: Essays on Design and Design Studies and Culture is Everywhere: The Museum of Corn-temporary Art. He is currently working on a World History of Design, to be published in London, by Bloomsbury.
