Tiago Silva, student of ESAD, is the author of the Senhor de Matosinhos poster.

The challenge was proposed by the Matosinhos City Council to ESAD, within a partnership that the two have maintained for several years now and that has recently lead to the creation of a Design Incubator at Mercado de Matosinhos, which integrates the ESAD IDEA – Investigation in Art and Design (investigation center of the school).

The proposal for the development of the city’s festivities’ graphic identity has been presented to the students of 4 classes of the 2nd grade of the Bachelor course of Communication Design, coordinated by the professors João Faria, João Martino and Elias Marques, under the curricular discipline Project I.

There were been presented 90 proposals, selected 30 finalists, and the winner project belongs to Tiago Silva, student of Class 4 of the 2nd grade of the Bachelor course in Communication Design.

The City Council will award the poster winner a monetary prize and other four honorable mentions.

The festivities of Senhor de Matosinhos are an important moment to the city and also to the north of the country, thanks to its dimension and ancestral character. During three weeks – this year from May 8th to June 1st, with official holiday on May 26 – thousands of people visit the city, with a high number of religious festivities programmed, ludic activities (cultural and sportive), music and fairs, and its Igreja do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, work of the architect Nasoni, as epicenter.

The finalist posters will be presented on an open-air exhibition at Basílio Teles Garden, with opening on May 9th, at 15h. The prizes shall be awarded on May 15th, at 16h30, at Salão Nobre of Matosinhos City Hall.

The participation of ESAD and its students on this high moment for the city becomes especially important since the school completes this year 25 years of existence.

Matosinhos is a blessed city – among other reasons, not less important though, because it is home of such a creative place as ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design. The partnership that we maintain for some years is strategical to the municipality, since we intend to be part of Unesco Creative Cities Network. The contest presented by the ESAD for the poster of Senhor de Matosinhos 2015 is thus one of the many examples of the great fruits of the collaboration between the city and ESAD. It was possible to join one of our most ancestral traditions, and also one of our great symbols, to the contemporaneity and design produced on the most reputable school of Portugal in these fields.
