The Municipal City Hall of Matosinhos and esad—idea, Investigation in Design and Art are inaugurating the Casa do Design Matosinhos with the exhibition BURILADA | artefacts for survival, on June 30, at 18:00.

The Casa do Design Matosinhos intends to stand as a central space of exhibition, divulgation and critical production of knowledge in design, focusing on the Portuguese design. Along with the regular programming – centered in exhibitions that arouse reflection and debate regarding the culture of contemporary design or, in another perspective that investigate, collect and preserve historical knowledge connected to the evolution of design in its various areas – it will be created a permanent collection that enables the investigation and spread of knowledge in design. This project results from a partnership between Matosinhos City Hall and ESAD IDEA and it intends to open itself to diferent areas, themes and publics, as, to be receptive to news proposals and future partners, reinforcing the dimension of a space that should preferably connect with every domain and, at the same time, be of international and national relevance.

The opening of the Casa do Design Matosinhos is part of the arguments for the admission of Matosinhos to the Creative Cities Network of UNESCO, recently presented regarding the Trienal de Milão. The Casa do Design is being set up in the garage of the Municipal City Hall building, which has welcome numerous exhibitions, such as Desejo, Desejo, Tensão, Transição– Percursos do Design Português, an exhibition promoted by Matosinhos City Hall, EXD'15 and esad—idea in 2015/16.

The exhibition BURILADA | artefacts for survival, curated by Francisco Providência, designer and lecturer at the University of Aveiro, and Helena Sofia Silva, lecturer at ESAD/College of Art and Design, presents a set of design objects which stand as agents in the reconfiguration of material culture in contemporary Portugal. Artefacts that connect design and craft, drawing and production, following geometries and diverse geographies. Artefacts that rescue knowledge and identities, revive economies, revalue materials and rethought functions. Present at the inauguration of Casa do Design Matosinhos, this objects intend to open the field of possibilities to survival, connecting center and periphery, high and low technology, a body that, modernly disassociated the hand from the head.

Exemple of this is the case of lã de Bucos (Cabeceiras de Basto), reimagined in contemporary pieces guided by Helena Cardoso, which also contributed for the settlement of the population and for the generational renewal. Or the filigree from Póvoa de Lanhoso, the burel de Manteigas, the cork, the embroidery of Minho or the pottery of S. Pedro do Corval, cases in which the designer’s distant glare found the ancestral knowledge of the craftsmen and proposed alternatives.

Sophisticated instruments, of rapid prototyping to online sales, enable, currently, the validation of the small production scale, allowing cost production reduction and to and dispense the intermediaries and charges of major infrastructures.

The graphic image of Casa do Design Matosinhos was developed by the atelier NON–VERBAL CLUB, fomed by João Martino, Miguel Almeida, Susana Almeida and Joana Sobral.
