Alphabet and numbering books are commonplace for children but there is no reason why adults cannot also be playful and enjoy the richness and complexity of the graphic symbols that we are most familiar with.
The workshop conducted by George Hardie in December 2013 asked students from year one of the MA in Communication Design to explore the many associated meanings of numbers and letters in a way that focused on the act of making.
Students were asked to consider the notions of batch production, authenticity and self-publishing, creating a collective publication that explored the quality and characteristics of printing and reproduction techniques, paying special attention to the tactile characteristics of materials.
The result is this handmade books, self-publishing and batch production exhibition, an unique limited edition publication that celebrates the hand-made object.
